Payroll Technician III - Payroll Services

Classification Title: Payroll Technician III

Classification Salary Range: $3,776 - $6,833 per month. 

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

The mission of Payroll Services is to provide timely and accurate compensation payments for all employees, provide prompt and reliable information/service to our customers in a personal and professional manner, stay current on regulations, policies, and procedures that govern compensation, and promptly address the changes on campus.

Under the general supervision of the Payroll Services Manager, the Payroll Technician III will serve as the technical expert for the more difficult payroll and personnel transactions. The incumbent will independently calculate, process, and reconcile the full range of payroll and personnel transactions, including the unusually difficult and complex transactions, for all pay plans, work schedules, categories of employees, leave statuses, and accruals. The Payroll Technician III will trace and correct payroll documents by searching records, and contacting employees and representatives of the State Controller’s Office. The Payroll Technician III will assist the Payroll Services Manager with troubleshooting automated systems, testing upgrades and implementations, and assisting with day-to-day activities such as providing training, guidance, and assistance to other payroll staff.  Overtime may be required during peak time frames.

 Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a technical expert for overtime, shift differential, salary adjustments, leave status, and accruals – vacation, holiday, sick, jury, bereavement, LWOP, AWOL, military, and compensatory time off.
  • Subject matter expert for all disability types; IDL, NDI, CAT Leave.
  • Provide guidance and assistance with more complex calculations of garnishments, levies, and pay related to but not limited to: docks, accounts receivables, adjustments, and transfer of funds.
  • Research, analyze and resolve inquiries of campus users engaged in payroll activities related to leaves of absence and leave accrual rates.
  • Assist Payroll Services Manager with auditing the accuracy of retirement codes for employees' appointments and department audit requests from the State Controller's Office, Chancellor's Office, and CalPERS.
  • Provides technical training to payroll staff, student assistants, and campus community

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience: Equivalent to three years of payroll and personnel experience in payroll and human resources record-keeping and data entry which has provided the referenced knowledge and abilities.

    Education: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to audit and reconcile data, interpret and apply written rules and regulations;
  • Effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and handles highly sensitive personal situations;
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities and projects;
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Computer literate using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe;
  • Experience designing electronic or hard copy communications;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance or any other related field. Payroll experience in a University environment.
