Position Description

Working Title: Academic Advising Assistant 

Department Name: Student Success Center for the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences

Division: Academic Affairs 

Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment.  Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year, with the possibility of renewal if funds and/or program needs exist.

Classification Title: Student Services Professional I/B

Classification Salary Range: $4,066 - $5,752 per month 

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

Under the general supervision of the Director, Student Success Center, the incumbent provides routine academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the undergraduate student population to support in retention, closing the achievement gap, and degree completion. Using established parameters, regulations and guidelines, the incumbent supports and advises students, provides advising interventions, makes recommendation on individual cases to resolve student problems, and tracks each student cohort thereafter to ensure efficient degree completion. Advisor will work with undeclared students assigned to CNBS to promote declaring a major in a timely fashion that will ensure degree completion.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides routine academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the undergraduate student population.
  • Supports students in degree planning and timely completion of degree.
  • Supports students in navigating their academic plan while connecting them to the on-campus support network.
  • Keeps open lines of communication with campus partners on policies and procedures affecting the undocumented and undeclared student population.
  • Provides feedback on student concerns and needs
  • Stays up to date on policy updates and procedures affecting this population.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
  • Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management;
  • Working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques;
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation;
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations;
  • Ability to draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-task with effective time management and organization skills;
  • Ability to advise students individually on student-related matters;
  • Ability to complete assignments within defined instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals;
  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization;
  • Ability to use standard office software, including spreadsheet and database applications to generate analytical reports;
  • Demonstrate ability to use creativity in generating business solutions in a fast-paced working environment;
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a high-performance team.
