Position Description

Working Title:  Supervising Plumber

Department Name: Building Maintenance

Division: Administration and Finance

Classification Title: Supervising Plumber

Classification Salary Range: $6,829 - $8,655 per month 

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $7,000 - 7,800 per month.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

Under the general supervision of the Building Trades Manager, the Surpivising Plumber primarily is responsible for supervising and working with one or more groups of crews of skilled journey-level plumbers and their semi-skilled assistants in the performance of general plumbing maintenance and repair work. The incumbent participates in preventative maintenance and attends project planning meetings for new construction projects on campus. May also oversee the design and installation of plumbing equipment and systems for new construction and or major modification projects. 

Special Working Conditions: 

This position may be called in for overtime during events and/or emergencies.
May operate campus vehicles and carts.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervisor work direction to a small group or crew of skilled plumbers.
  • Prepare standard reports and work with other trades workers to provide input on the maintenance work order system.
  • Determine material, and equipment estimate cost, time, and staffing needs for plumbing projects.
  • Provide a high level of inspection of work in progress to ensure it meets quality requirements, specifications, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations and inspect related work performed by contractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience: Two or more years of experience as a journey-level plumber including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity.
    Education: Normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber's apprenticeship program 
  • Valid CA driver license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques and a working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to construction projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade Knowledge of the operation of building automation systems
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety, the California State Plumbing codes, including those related to fire and irrigation
  • Thorough knowledge of cross-connection control as it relates to the potable water system which includes backflow prevention devices
  • Ability to accurately estimate cost, supplies and material and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work Prepare a list of materials.
  • Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems, Perform applicable soldering
  • Obtain necessary certification for recycled water users Site Supervisor Make rough sketches of plumbing installations
    Maintain records and retrieved data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems, provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
    Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Prepare complex reports and standard reports, read and write at a level appropriate to the position
  • Perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
