About the Department/Position:
It is the mission of the CSUDH Police Department to provide a safe campus conducive to education for the university's students, faculty, staff, and visitors. We will accomplish our mission by encouraging community awareness and providing proactive service in a fair, sensitive, and professional manner in support of the university’s mission. The University Police Department will enforce all laws of the state of California and educate the community on safety and risk avoidance practices.
Under the general direction of the Chief of Police, the Corporal performs a variety of general law enforcement duties. General law enforcement duties include but are not limited to; patrolling campus buildings and grounds on foot or by vehicle, maintaining order, enforcing laws, rules, and regulations, apprehending and processing violators, initiating police action, preparing reports, assisting campus personnel, students and the public. The Corporal will lead police officers assigned to the shift as assigned by the shift supervisor and during the absence of the sergeant and will provide input to the preparation of performance appraisals. The Corporal will be responsible for providing training to probationary employees during the field training program.
Special Working Conditions: The Corporal may be assigned to rotating day and night shifts and may be required to rotate through various duties, including patrol and investigations, as directed by the Chief of Police. Overtime work may be required. The Corporal is responsible for maintaining all uniforms and equipment necessary to perform their duties effectively.
Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to criminal and non-criminal incidents, motor vehicle collisions, disturbances, and emergency situations.
- Conduct initial and follow-up investigations of criminal activity.
- Patrol campus to deter crime and maintain a visible law enforcement presence.
- Testify in court proceedings as required.
- Lead campus police patrol operations in the absence of the Sergeant, including:
- Assigning tasks to officers.
- Reviewing officer reports.
- Providing input for performance appraisals.
- Coordinate crime scene investigations and ensure all actions comply with legal and constitutional standards.
- Support departmental training initiatives, including:
- Participating in and providing in-service training.
- Maintaining Field Training Officer (FTO) certification.
- Meeting all state-mandated training and firearms qualification requirements.
- Prepare detailed written reports on criminal and non-criminal incidents, traffic collisions, and arrests.
- Communicate effectively with officers, superiors, and the university community.
- Ensure proper notifications and accurate communication of critical information.
Minimum Qualifications:

- Required Experience:
- Two or more years of active law enforcement experience
- Pass a medical examination, physical agility test, written examination, psychological examination, a background check requiring fingerprinting, and pass a drug test.
- Be a U. S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship prior to submitting an application for this position.
- Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Not have a domestic violence felony conviction.
- Be of good moral character.
- Be able to read and write at the level necessary to perform the job of a Police Officer as determined by job-related examinations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
- Thorough knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
- Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
- Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift.
