Position Information

This is a Temporary and/or hourly intermittent appointment. No probationary period. No permanent status is granted.

Conditions of Employment         

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Department: Physical Plant

Physical Plant is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, repair and upkeep of State owned and operated buildings and grounds, totaling in excess of 920,785 gross square feet of building space and 346 acres of grounds, 40% in active use.  Its mission is to provide an aesthetically appealing, well-maintained, and safe and comfortable physical environment conducive to learning and working.

Position Summary

Under immediate supervision of Manager and/or supervisor of Custodial Services, in the Physical Plant Department, Custodian's perform custodial duties in an assigned building or portion thereof, including, but not limited to campus offices, classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, auditoriums; gymnasiums, locker rooms, health and child care center; patios, entryways and walkways and workshops; and, gather and deliver recyclables, arrange and set up furniture, equipment and related items; participate in campus event set-up and clean up including moving bleachers; load and unload cleaning supplies and materials; and, perform other related work as assigned by the manager and/or supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial  systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required; perform work involving regular physical activity; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships. Some positions may require ability to move up to 50 pounds.

Have a general knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and working knowledge of safety and sanitation measures appropriate for custodial work.  Ability to perform arithmetic computations where required; and also be able to perform job duties in a manner which is highly service-oriented; and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of experience in custodial cleaning operations and at least one (1) year custodial experience working in an institution of higher education.

High School graduation or equivalent.

A basic knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work is preferred.
