Position Information    

This is a full-time management (MPP) position.  MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President.  MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Conditions of Employment        

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Salary Information

Major Duties

CSU Dominguez Hills seeks an experienced and transformative leader to assume the role of Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. Under the administrative direction of the University President, the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO) position requires a collaborative, and transformative individual to provide leadership for the CSUDH campus. With a direct report to the President and as a member of the Cabinet, the CDEIO will oversee the Office of Equity and Inclusion which includes Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation and Title IX.

The CDEIO will be responsible for the development and implementation of proactive strategies to advance diversity and inclusive excellence as core values throughout all aspects of the University community, business practices and programming in support of the California State University, Dominguez Hills’ commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action. Approaches should include proactive-developmental workshops and training designed to operationalize diversity and inclusion in specific colleges, departments, and administration domains across the campus. The CDEIO will also oversee the campus’ compliance focused activities that include collaboration with the Title IX officer and the investigation of complaints.

The CDEIO will embrace CSUDH’s evolving definition of diversity that is broad and inclusive. In consultation and collaboration with stakeholders that include the President and other senior academic and administrative leaders, the CDEIO will guide the overall direction of diversity-oriented programs and initiatives, by leading efforts to develop and implement strategies for diversity and inclusion aligned with the University’s strategic plan. The position will cohesively work with existing programs and initiatives, including those championed by Multicultural Affairs in the Division of Student Affairs. As a University leader, the CDEIO will maintain strong collaborative working relationships among senior executives, faculty, including academic deans, staff, students and external constituents, and serves as a team builder.

As a strategic and innovative visionary, the CDEIO will have a track record of accomplishments in leading institutional initiatives, building programs, operating in a collaborative manner, managing high performing teams, and promoting diversity in a complex organizational setting. The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of assessment, research and best practices around campus diversity, its benefits, and the conditions that must be in place to achieve inclusive excellence.


Master's degree is required.

A minimum of eight years of successful and progressive experience in a leadership and supervisory role directly related to diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Proven experience facilitating and leading diversity and inclusion efforts in a diverse university setting.

Proven experiences as an organizational leader and program builder, specifically around initiatives that promote diversity, equity, access and inclusion in a professional environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Demonstrated ability as a strategic and innovative visionary, ability to be unbiased, strategic; a creative thinker and active listener who can mediate diverse opinions to address shared needs.

Thorough knowledge of assessment, research and best practices around campus diversity, its benefits, and the conditions that must be in place to achieve inclusive excellence.

Demonstrated track record and deep commitment to developing effective diversity and inclusion initiatives; proven institutional leader, building programs, managing high performing teams, and promoting diversity in a complex organizational setting.

Ability to understand the needs and expectations of the university by working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, community partners and other stakeholders;

Thorough knowledge regarding research, scholarship, and rigorous assessment practices that address campus diversity, its benefits, and the conditions that must be in place to achieve those benefits

Demonstrated skills with collecting tracking, managing, and using data to provide transparency on issues of diversity, to assess program outcomes, and to increase shared accountability;

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the area of strategic diversity leadership at an organizational level, working through both the formal networks of institutional governance and the informal networks of campus culture and co-curricular activities.

Demonstrated skill in communication and conflict-resolution needed to navigate politically-charged situations to resolve problems, build consensus, and reconcile competing interests.

Ability to be unbiased, strategic; a creative thinker and active listener who can mediate diverse opinions to address shared needs;

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the area of anti-bias / anti-oppression work at an organizational level.

50% -  Develop and implement the University's strategic plan for diversity and inclusion, in partnership with other administrative/divisional units to ensure that all diversity initiatives are aligned with the overall University’s strategic plan. Develop and implement strategies to monitor and evaluate institution-wide progress toward creating a diverse and equitable work and learning environment that include continuous monitoring of the campus environment, regular assessment and evaluation of the campus climate. Oversee the responsible planning, stewardship, management and accountability for the fiscal and human resources of the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Foster, champion and advance the work of the President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion. The Council serves as an advisory board to the President and proposes recommendations to enhance understanding and bridge differences up, down, and across the University. Lead the implementation of forums, develop, implement, evaluate appropriate training, workshops, presentations, learning modules and other strategies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion to enhance the quality of the University’s workforce through educational and training opportunities. Provide technical assistance, advice coaching and consultation to individuals and groups regarding cross-cultural conflicts and disputes, as well as policies and practices that might have an adverse impact on a particular group(s). Develop and present an array of innovative ideas and program concepts for consideration, selection, and implementation by the University. Formulate and implement a culture of inclusion and engagement policies, procedures, programs, and initiatives. Ensure successful delivery of programs/services and monitor the effectiveness of inclusive culture, diversity, and engagement programs. Create and implement communication strategies and content management for training, web resources (internal and external audiences), and print materials to support diversity and related initiatives. 

40% -  Work collaboratively with divisions, offices and individuals across campus, including, but not limited to the following: Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Admissions, Institutional Research, Human Resources Management and University Advancement. Consult senior leaders to integrate diversity and equity practices into institutional employment and workplace practices, including business practices and programming in support of the University’s commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action. Ensure compliance with applicable federal/state laws, policies, and procedures (e.g., Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity). Assist with preparing a variety of reports and correspondence, including but not limited to employment, equity, diversity, and inclusion activities required by state and federal agencies. Understands how to respond to on-campus bias incidents, , and specifically ensuring an appropriate University response for the community or communities involved. Consult with appropriate University Officials regarding complaints of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, paying close attention to CSU policies and procedures on legally protected statuses. Work collaboratively with General Counsel, including regularly apprising the office of ongoing and/or potential legal issues. Collaborate with faculty and staff in Faculty Affairs and Human Resources Management to develop strategies for recruiting and retaining a more diverse faculty and staff; assess efforts to achieve the university’s equity hiring and retention goals.
