Position Description

The Department of Communications at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Academic Year) with the appointment starting in Fall 2022.

Advertising and Public Relations Program

The Advertising/Public Relations degree program is designed to help students develop an in-depth understanding of the fate and impact of advertising and public relations in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. The program focuses on preparing students to become logical and innovative advertising and public relations professionals who also examine the ethical and cultural values in their practice. The program also stresses both analytical approaches and critical thinking skills. Students will learn the foundations underlying persuasive messaging as well as analytical tools applied to advertising and public relations research. Upon completion of the program, students will achieve a wealth of knowledge, practical skills, and the ability to think critically and strategically in developing promotional media messages and strategies.

The Position

Tenure-Track faculty in the Advertising/Public Relations Program teach three to four undergraduate courses per semester. They are expected to engage in scholarly and/or professional activities, and perform service to the department, college, university and the community.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Strategic Communication or related field by the time of appointment. We will consider a candidate with a master’s degree who has extensive professional strategic communication experience. The candidate will have a strong record of teaching experience in face to face, hybrid, and/or online formats. They must be able to teach courses that range from introductory to advanced, such as: Advertising Strategy and Copy Writing, Public Relations Writing, Digital and Social Media in Public Relations, Media Analysis and Research Methods and Integrated Communications Management at the undergraduate level. Further, the ideal candidate will possess the mentoring skills to advise the PRSSA chapter (i.e. Bateman competition) and/or another student-run club, and engage in other extracurricular activities.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to teaching diverse student populations, including non-traditional and first-generation students. Therefore, the candidate should demonstrate cultural competence to engage with CSUDH’s diverse student population and engage in equitable practices in their advising, teaching, research, and service.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will possess the teaching and professional experience needed to teach three to four courses per semester in the Advertising/Public Relations degree program. The candidate will have a record of scholarship within the communications field, preferably within the field of strategic communication. A candidate who has a master’s and extensive professional strategic communication experience, will be expected to sustain an outstanding and ongoing record of professional activities in that field. Additional duties include advising the PRSSA chapter, student advising, and significant service at the department, college, and university levels.

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must have experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • Ph.D by the time of appointment or a master's degree in strategic communication, mass communication or a closely related field with extensive professional strategic communication experience.
  • Demonstrated success teaching advertising/public relations courses with an emphasis on digital strategies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard or Canvas.

Employment Requirement – Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The US Equivalency certification is used to validate foreign studies from an academic credential evaluation agency and is evaluated on foreign studies and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the United States. The certification must translate the information in English, and confirm that your highest terminal degree is US Equivalent to a US terminal degree (i.e., Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate’s, Doctor’s of Philosophy).
