Position Description

Athletic Field Groundsworker – Facilities Services

Classification Title: Lead Groundsworker

Classification Salary Range: $3,544 - $5,985 per month.

The anticipated starting salary for this position is $4,583 - $5,000 per month.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

The Facilities Services grounds and landscape staff are highly-skilled individuals that include grounds workers, light equipment operators, gardening specialists, and irrigation specialists. They maintain approximately 170 acres of landscaped grounds with safety, hygiene, and aesthetics as their objectives.

Under the general supervision of the Grounds Manager, the Athletics Field Groundsworker will provide specialized high-quality maintenance and management to the campus sports fields. Responsibilities include but are not limited to resurfacing athletic fields and facilities, preparing fields for events, upholding responsibility for the upkeep and management of a professional natural turf playing surface, and requisitioning supplies, and equipment necessary to maintain the landscape. 

The typical schedule is 5:30 am - 2:00 pm (may vary according to campus needs).

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform high-quality grounds and field maintenance which includes but is not limited to the lining of athletic fields, sports field maintenance, baseball and softball field dug-out cleaning, field tree staking, etc. 
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on small tools and equipment,

  • Utilization of all tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance, and landscape installation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of commercial and professional experience in grounds maintenance, turf management, and sports field management. At least one of the two years of experience must be in Athletic Fields maintenance/management.
  • Valid CA driver license 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of sports field grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in turf maintenance/management, and soil management.
  • Must have general knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds including approved methods and materials in their control and eradication.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work,
  • Ability to utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding and working knowledge of natural turf playing surface requirements for athletic competitions.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture/Turf Grass Sciences/or related field.
