The Position
Under the supervision of the Department Chair, the Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education oversees the Directors of grant-funded stipend opportunities and Practice Education for both the full-time and part-time Master of Social Work (MSW) program options. In keeping with the Council on Social Work Education’s emphasis on competency-based education and declaration of field education as the signature pedagogy of the social work profession, the Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education has leadership responsibilities and serves as a key member of the social work faculty. This position uses a student-centered, anti-racist, and equity minded approach in all communication, teaching, and service efforts.
The Senior Director of Stipend Programs and Practice Education is expected to coordinate the practicum learning experiences of all MSW students to support students' growth and development as justice-based social work practitioners. The Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education works closely with the Directors of CALSWEC and DCFS grants, and with the Director of Practice Education to provide overall direction and alignment of accreditation standards, research and best practices related to field education, including the technology that supports it. The responsibilities for the Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education position include guidance and support to the directors of the existing stipend opportunities and practice education, assistance with practice education activities as necessary, pursuit of additional grant-funded stipend opportunities, expansion of practicum placement sites that meet the wide range of student needs, resolution of student and site issues related to the practicum placements, resolution of student issues related to stipend repayment, and evaluation of the efficiency and efficacy of the stipend opportunities and practice experiences. The Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education is also expected to be well-engaged in the community to stay current with needs and priorities, develop relevant partnerships, and maintain field practicum sites and relationships that meet the needs of the communities in the Los Angeles County area. This position requires collaboration with other schools of social work practice education administrators and faculty and represents the Department’s practice education program to the community by attending consortium meetings. The Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education will collaborate with the College of Continuing & Professional Education (CCPE) Program Coordinator, CCPE Practice Coordinator, and other department staff and faculty. Additionally, the Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education will collaborate with the Directors of the stipend opportunities and the Director of Practice Education to develop orientation, training, and information sessions for students, seminar instructors (faculty liaisons), practicum instructors and preceptors, extensive student advising, support and guidance as well as the overall administration of the field placements. The Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice Education will conduct site visits as needed. This position requires the Senior Director of Stipend Programs & Practice to teach one course each semester and one course in the summer.
The ideal candidate in this position will support our growing effort to alleviate the financial burden of graduate education through grant-funded student stipends and to deliver practice education that is student centered and more attentive to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Therefore, qualified candidates will also bring subject-matter expertise on topics related to grant-seeking, practice (field) education, racial and ethnic equity, student centered pedagogy, and adherence to accreditation standards. Since the program is undergirded by a Critical Race Theory (CRT) approach to social work, familiarity with CRT, intersectionality and similar theoretical frameworks that critique structural forms of oppression is also important. The ideal candidate will be an engaging individual who is equally competent communicating and working effectively with students, administrators, fellow faculty, and partner agency representatives. This position requires a professional who is committed to social work practice and education that is justice and strengths-based, multiculturally competent, community-based, and inter-professionally collaborative. Key characteristics for a successful candidate include strong student engagement skills, and competence communicating and working effectively with students, administrators, fellow faculty, and partner agency representatives. This position also requires experience at adeptly addressing challenging and sensitive student issues, along with experience in effectively mediating between individuals with different positionalities of power (e.g., students, agencies, and faculty liaisons). Additionally, extreme organization and attention to detail are required for the position.
